SIGMET

  • Non-convective weather hazardous to all aircraft
  • Issued as needed, updated as necessary
  • Vaild 4 hours, 6 hours for hurricanes
    • Volcanic ash (VA / WV)
    • Tropical cyclone (TC)
    • Weather phenomenon (WS)
      • Severe icing
      • Severe or extreme turbulence
      • Widespread dust storms with visibility < 3sm

Convective SIGMET (WST)

  • Hazardous convective weather affecting flight safety
  • Valid for 2 hours, issued as needed, updated as necessary
    • Line Thunderstorm – 60+ miles long with TS affecting 40% of length
    • Area Thunderstorm – 40% of 3000sq mi area with strong radar or satellite reflectivity
    • Embedded Thunderstorm – more than 30 minutes
      • Special Issuance – wind gusts ≥ 50kn, hail > 3/4in diameter, tornados
      • ForeFlight/NOAA convective outlook
